It is the ice-cream debut of the year, the one that fans have been drooling over ever since American gourmet ice-cream chain, Stucchi's, announced its intentions to head East. Chocolate-chip cookie dough ice-cream will be launched in Hong Kong's increasingly crowded ice-cream market at the end of September, one of 10 flavours that local franchise holder, Benjamin Wong, will initially stock in his first Asian store.
Frozen yoghurt in equally creative flavours - oatmeal cookie dough and mocha fudge swirl, for example - are also part of Stucchi's recipe for success. In addition to scoops, soft-serves and pints, the 400 square feet parlour on Hoi Kwong Street will sell milk shakes and soda floats. Cakes are in the pipeline.
The full Stucchi's range includes other indulgences such as white Russian fudge, cookies and cream, caramel malted milk ball, hazelnut espresso, and peanut butter chip.
Pass the bison In the cut-throat world of the silver screen, movie moguls have come up with recipes starring snake, dung beetles, blood soup, eyeball garnishes, and monkey brains.
Real life is more mundane: when Ted Turner is let loose in the kitchen, he turns out . . . bison meat loaf. The TV tycoon's recipe is included in a new cookery book listing the favourite recipes of America's top television executives. Eat what Playboy boss Hugh Hefner eats, and you'll be tucking into a less-than-sexy pot roast. Cable Cooks is published by October Farm Publishing.
McLettuce land Chinese lettuce from Yunnan has passed the McDonald's test of excellence. The province will supply 30,000 tonnes annually, replacing the American and Australian lettuce at the chain's 157 outlets in China and Hong Kong from next year. The pollution-free greens will come from Songming county near Kunming.
