INCHCAPE Pacific Chairman Paul Cheng says China's managers need to understand the complexities involved in working with foreign companies.

This is critical for many mainland enterprises because their links with foreign companies form the cornerstone of their strategic business development.

'One of the main challenges will be in dealing with and understanding cultural differences,' Mr Cheng said.

' 'Cross-cultural management' is one of the buzz phrases that tends to be overused.

'But it is exactly what more managers around the world are confronted with on a daily basis as they work with international markets, international customers, international suppliers and international partners.

'Sometimes, within their own organisations, they are working with colleagues, subordinates and managers of different nationalities.' Inchcape sponsors a programme by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania to educate mainland managers.
