CANBERRA: Prime Minister Paul Keating yesterday announced the name of the next, and possibly last, Governor-General of Australia. The Queen last night gave her consent to the choice of High Court Justice Sir William Deane to replace Bill Hayden. His selection was regarded as surprising but not controversial. Mr Keating said that although Sir William's appointment was at the Queen's pleasure, he had agreed it would expire on December 31, 2000, a date which would dovetail with the Prime Minister's plans for Australia to become a republic by 2001. Sir William has been on the High Court bench since 1982 and has had a distinguished career since being called to the Bar in 1957. He is seen as progressive and will assume his post next February.
