As the territory's economy develops, energy consumption, in the form of oil products, electricity and gas, has gone up AS society progresses and economic activities abound in Hong Kong, consumption of electricity, gas and oil products also rises.

In the past 10 years, the amount of energy consumed by final users in Hong Kong rose at an average rate of seven per cent per annum.

This includes consumption by industrial, commercial or residential users for purposes such as heating, cooking, operating equipment and machinery, and driving vehicles.

The unit of measurement for quantity of energy is the 'joule'.

One terajoule (1012 joules) of energy can illuminate about 3,200 light bulbs of 100 watts each for a whole year.

Of the 301,000 terajoules of energy consumed by final users in Hong Kong last year, 58 per cent were in the form of oil products, which include petrol, diesel oil, liquified petroleum gas and kerosene.
