A DEFENDANT in an $8.5 million cigarette smuggling case will remain in custody until his trial after a High Court judge refused him bail. Chong Tsoi-jun, 49, is to stand trial with two others - Henfrey Tin Sau-kwong, 45, and Yeung Kam-fai, 43 - over an alleged contraband operation. A committal hearing for the trio will be held in Eastern Court on October 2. Chong, a merchant, first had his bail revoked in April after potential prosecution witness businessman Tommy Chui To-yan, 38, was killed in Singapore. The merchant was released on bail the following month. But bail was revoked again after the Independent Commission Against Corruption challenged the magistrate's decision. On Tuesday, Chong applied for bail, but Mr Justice Leonard refused it yesterday.
