A SCHIZOPHRENIC who robbed a woman of $7 after he thought an insurance saleswoman had tricked him out of $900 was sentenced to two years in jail yesterday. Chan Wing-kwong, 22, was armed with a knife when he robbed the 21-year-old woman inside a lift in Tai Yuen Estate, Tai Po, on December 29 last year. He wanted to buy a comic book on a revolution during the Tang dynasty. But his victim only had $7, so he had to make up the price of the book with $10 of his own. In mitigation, defence counsel Connie Fung told the District Court her client was emotionally disturbed because before the robbery, he had met a saleswoman who convinced him to buy an insurance policy. Chan later tried to cancel the policy and reclaim his $900, but failed. Thinking he had been deceived and seeking compensation, he robbed the woman. Miss Fung said a psychiatrist had confirmed Chan had difficulty controlling his impulses. But Deputy Judge Andree-Wiltens said Chan must have planned to rob as he carried a knife.
