ILLEGAL immigrants are feared to be behind a new wave of graft, police have warned the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

The move was disclosed by Assistant Commissioner (Operations), Dick Lee Ming-kwai, yesterday as policeman Yuen Kam-bor was sentenced to 31/2-year imprisonment for accepting bribes totalling $448,000 from vice establishment operators and perverting the course of justice.

Mr Lee said the force had drawn the attention of the ICAC to this area of worry early this year.

'While questioning illegal immigrants, our officers may find out where they hide or where Chinese prostitutes are working. But they might not take action.

'Instead, they might go to the karaoke lounge or their shelter and demand a bribe.' Mr Lee emphasised that the move was not a result of any complaint or allegation.

'Our internal review found there could be a chance of corruption.

'It was necessary to do something to prevent it,' he said.
