CHIEF Secretary Anson Chan Fang On-sang yesterday pledged to learn from her late grandfather's patriotic spirit and closeness to the people after returning from a much-publicised visit to her hometown. Mrs Chan and 11 members of the Fang family returned via Nanjing after attending the premiere of a television series on the late General Fang Zhenwu on Saturday and touring his village Wafu near Hefei, Anhui's capital city. Mrs Chan, who visited Anhui after becoming the first Chinese Chief Secretary in late 1993, thanked the provincial government for their warm reception. On the TV series, to be broadcast on China Central Television, she said: 'It has left a deep impression on us. 'As his offspring, I think we should learn from my grandfather's spirit of patriotism and his closeness to the people.' The visit was heavily covered by the press amid speculation about her becoming the first chief executive. She met Vice-Premier Qian Qichen and Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office Director Lu Ping on a secret visit to Beijing in July. Mrs Chan reiterated yesterday that her visit had no political implications.
