WHILE walking past the Urban Council rubbish collection dump in Luard Road in Wan Chai, at 11.35am, on August 25, a small van with Jardines Technical Services on the side (with the Jardines logo) pulled up outside the dump.
Two men got out, opened the back of the van and, while one man started moving green canisters over to the dump and stacking them, the other cracked open the valves on two of these canisters and vented them.
When these two canisters were empty, they too joined the now large pile at the dumpsite.
At that point the two men noticed my interest and redoubled their efforts to empty the van then quickly got back into the front and drove away. I had by now noted the registration number (which I have supplied to the South China Morning Post) and the time of the incident and therefore walked over to see what these curious green cylinders were. They had the words Forane 22 on the side, presumably the brand name for standard R22 refrigerant.
Are the directors of Jardines aware of this incident? Should not waste coolants and collected spent coolants be returned for proper waste disposal? Would the relevant Jardines director care to comment? SIMON BOYDE Causeway Bay
