From Jules Verne's mention of Bureau Veritas in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the certification company has built a long history of excellence. Founded in 1828 to assess the seaworthiness of ships, Bureau Veritas has grown to become a world leader in testing, inspection and certification (TIC) for a wide range of products and services. From toys and management systems to ships, oil rigs and A380s, Bureau Veritas performs conformity assessments as an independent body and a trusted partner in ensuring quality, health, safety and environmental and social responsibility.
"Reputation is our No 1 asset and it will continue to grow as we focus on client satisfaction," says Romain Petit, executive vice-president for the Asia zone of the industry and facilities division.
Providing third- and second-party TIC services to more than 400,000 small and large government and private clients in about 140 countries, Bureau Veritas offers unmatched coverage. The company, for example, inspects fabricated cranes that Singapore or Hong Kong-based port operators use in many terminals worldwide. Bureau Veritas delivers various services through eight global businesses: marine, industry, in-service inspection and verification, construction, certification, commodities, consumer products and government services and international trade.
"We are very global but our solutions are always locally aligned," says Rakesh Kumar, country CEO for Singapore's industry and facilities division.
About 98 per cent of its 10,000 employees in China are Chinese, and the approach is the same wherever the company operates. Bureau Veritas is able to certify compliance to country-specific standards therefore local governments rely on the company to help implement existing regulations or evaluate upcoming ones.
With a large presence in Asia including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Myanmar, the company derives a significant portion of its business from the region particularly China and Singapore.
