The JPC Anti-Drug Night, held at the Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre, aimed to enhance the public's knowledge of drugs and to let young people enjoy a fun and meaningful evening.

The activity was partly inspired by the territory's first Summit Meeting on Drugs held earlier at the University of Hong Kong during which Governor Chris Patten pledged $30 million for activities and programmes to fight drugs.

The Governor also announced a 'Forward Action Plan' which included 26 steps the Government would be taking to fight the problem.

Speaking at the Anti-Drug Night, Eastern District Commander Ross Crawford Williams said: 'The thing I would like to emphasise is that we need to work to beat drugs.

'No doubt, our community leaders and the staff of government and voluntary departments have been working very hard on that. Therefore, I am now whole-heartedly requesting your support.' Pop singers Amanda Lee Wai-man, Lee Ka-ming and Au Shiu-wai, who were invited to perform during the event, also made a call for youths to say no to drugs.
