A LECTURER died mysteriously after he fell in love with one of his students, an inquest heard yesterday.

  Leung Kwok-kei's social life was further complicated by an unwanted admirer.

   An unbalanced woman tormented him with phone calls, threatening to kill herself unless he returned her love.

  On March 19, Leung plunged to his death from an upper floor of his Sha Tin housing estate.

  Coroner Warner Banks returned an open verdict.

  'There is not enough evidence to arrive at a verdict of accidental death, or of death by suicide,' he said.

  Colleague Mok Kin-wing told the court that the love triangle had made the 31-year-old chemistry teacher miserable.

  'He said that the girls he wants won't come to him, and the girls he doesn't want do come to him,' Mr Mok said.

  One night, Leung arranged to meet his favourite chemistry student, the inquest heard.

  But she did not come.

  The teacher was distraught. 'He went out and wandered around the streets at midnight,' Mr Mok said.

   Women were not Leung's only source of tension, the court heard.

    He was concerned about his career and was desperately hoping for a promotion.

    Leung lived at home and most of his salary was passed to his mother.

    Stress drove Leung to ask his older brother, a doctor, for help.

    Dr Leung Kwok-ling said his brother had appeared tense and nervous. He prescribed Valium. 'It made him feel better so I continued to give it to him,' Dr Leung said.

    Nobody saw Leung plummet to his death.

   Police investigators were unable to determine whether he had tumbled from his own flat, or from somewhere else on the housing estate.
