Law Chai-sze, 65, from Kowloon, received an out-of-court settlement of US$1.35 million (HK$10.44 million) from St Vincent's Hospital, Manhattan, last week - just as the case was about to go to trial.

Her son Daniel Tze, a footwear importer living in New York, said: 'It's taken three years. Even if they had paid a lot more money, it would not be enough.

'She was very happy before, but the hospital's mistake has changed her life a lot.' Mrs Law's lawyer, Richard Frank, whose detective work revealed how a misunderstanding between two doctors had led to her misdiagnosis, was more upbeat about the settlement.

'She is very pleased. It is a great deal of money for a 65-year-old woman. It was a terribly disfiguring operation, but luckily she has no permanent impairment,' Mr Frank said.

As part of the settlement, the two sides had agreed not to discuss details of how it was reached, he said.
