TUEN MUN commuters are relishing the thought of a 'normal' journey to work from tomorrow, after eight days of three-hour bus crawls and endless ferry queues.
Residents in the northwest New Territories enjoyed a smooth journey to urban areas yesterday to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, after the Tuen Mun Highway reopened shortly after 5 am.
Travellers said they were pleased that the highway, which has been closed for more than a week for slope stabilisation work, was finally open.
Some were worried about another bout of heavy congestion in November, when a lane in each direction, near Siu Lam, will be closed for the installation of safety barriers.
Due to yesterday's holiday, few people were lining up at bus stops or the ferry pier during the morning peak hours and the traffic on the highway was smooth.
Traffic increased later in the day as people flocked to Kowloon or Hong Kong Island to join carnivals.
