TANG clansmen in Yuen Long have been promised a new dig next Wednesday for two sets of remains they claim were left in an ancestral grave during a government clearance.
The Government had eased its stance in its latest bid to resolve the four-year row, a spokesman said yesterday as the deadline passed to hand over the site to contractors for developing a landfill.
The site of the 200-year-old grave at Nim Wan, by Deep Bay, is inside the designated area for the development of the West New Territories Landfill.
The Government had recovered a set of remains from the grave last month but villagers claimed there were two other sets and continued to resist the development. Officials offered to send workers to dig up the area next Wednesday.
'We have sent a letter to the villagers, asking them to identify possible locations where the remains could have been buried,' a Lands Department spokesman said.
'Their representatives are also welcome to witness and help with the search on that day.' A letter reached the villagers yesterday, asking them to reply by Monday.
