Kien Hung to increase fleet
TAIWAN'S Kien Hung Shipping, one of Asia's fastest growing feedership operators, is to order three more 1,500-teu capacity container ships from Japan.
The company, which has a fleet of 20 owned and chartered-in feeder vessels, said the order was likely to be placed at the Shin Kurushima Yard within the next few weeks.
The order is believed to be valued at about US$60 million and may be placed in a two-plus-one option combination.
Deliveries are expected by the end of 1997.
Kien Hung has a long-standing relationship with Shin Kurushima and will take delivery of its fourth 1,510-teu feeder from the yard next month.
The company will then have 11 fully owned feederships. It also has 10 chartered vessels ranging in size from 500 teus to 1,200 teus.
