CHAIRMAN Gordon Wu says it is 'very possible' all three units of Consolidated Electric Power Asia's (CEPA) Shajiao C power plant could be commercially operational by the end of the year.

Mr Wu said the rotors from the first and second units of the 1,980-megawatt power plant in Guangdong must be flown back to England for repairs by consortium leader GEC Alsthom Power Plants of England and France.

The rotor of the third unit had already made the trip to England and was in good working order.

He said he found out about the design problem about four months ago.

'We are very disappointed with GEC,' Mr Wu said.

First there was vibration in the turbines, then trouble with the rotors, delaying profit contributions and putting a dent in the expected early completion bonus.

Some analysts said the impact on CEPA may not be that large because GEC would probably have to compensate CEPA for 80 per cent of the lost bonus.
