IN the year of the twinset, the Queen of Knits is bound to reign supreme and, this season, Sonia Rykiel has outdone herself in witty and frivolous designs.
One of the uncontested highlights is the tuxedo sweater, complete with white bib and bow tie, which has been so popular in Hong Kong that it has already sold out here.
Black and white is generally strong in Rykiel's knitwear this season, as well as slightly blue-toned or very dark grey that is almost black.
'There is a small but prominent pony theme,' said Patricia Higgins, the marketing manager. 'It's a print that looks like a cowhide with black-and-white patches but it's not easy to wear.' In Hong Kong, this design will be found on skirts, scarves and tops in velour.
'Velour has always been quite a substantial part of Sonia Rykiel's collection and she does it with a lot of her knits,' Ms Higgins said.
Some of the knits are shot through with sparkling threads this season and Rykiel has also injected some sparkle in the shape of rhinestones sewn discretely into knits as part of the pattern or as small motifs.
