THE Shaanxi Posts and Telecommunications Administration has signed a deal to use Northern Telecom's leading GSM 900 MHz digital cellular technology.
Northern Telecom (Asia) signed a contract recently to provide a turnkey cellular network for four cities including Xi'an, Yan'an, Xianyang and Baoji.
'Nortel's strong qualifications and excellent service were key to our choosing them to supply this system to Shaanxi,' said Li Guiru, deputy import director of the Shaanxi Posts and Telecommunications Administration.
'We were impressed by Nortel's unique Fractional Reuse feature for its GSM systems.' Nortel's GSM solution for the province makes use of the company's own Fractional Frequency Reuse technology which maximises use of available radio spectrum while reducing interference and enhancing transmission quality.
The GSM network will have an initial capacity for about 20,000 subscribers.
It is forecast to support 120,000 subscribers by 2000.
