IF you are following higher studies and have an interest in German culture, you may wish to apply for a scholarship scheme that will take you to a university in Germany.
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers up to four scholarships each year to Hong Kong students or young academics for postgraduate work at German universities or tertiary institutions.
The scholarships are granted for the academic year 1996-97 and comprise an intensive language course of two to six months preceding the university studies.
Although it is a one-year scholarship, the grant can be extended if the student has a satisfactory record and wishes to complete a specific academic plan.
DAAD's local lecturer Manfred Kaluza said the successful applicant does not necessarily have to get a degree from a German university. Research and studies in Germany may also serve to prepare for a degree in the student's university back home.
'The scholarship is set according to the applicant's academic standard,' Mr Kaluza said.
The scholarships cover tuition fees as well as travel and living expenses. As a rule, applicants should be under 32 years of age and already hold a master's degree.
