ORIENT Overseas Container Line (OOCL) and American President Lines (APL) yesterday started a dedicated feeder service between the Chinese port of Qingdao, and Kobe and Yokohama, Japan. A 180-teu vessel will call at Qingdao every 10 days. A second vessel of the same class will be added soon for a weekly service. The two APL-operated vessels will link the Chinese port to both carriers' extensive trans-Pacific and intra-Asia service networks via Japan. They already share direct weekly linehaul vessel calls at Yantian and Chiwan, and recently announced a direct call at Shanghai. Qingdao is the gateway port to Shandong Province, the third most populated province in China and one of the country's fastest-growing economic regions. 'Offering feeder service to Qingdao provides shippers with yet another option to choose from when moving goods to and from China,' said Paul Moss, managing director of APL's China operation.
