THE passenger terminal building, 1.2 kilometres long and one of the largest international terminals in the world, will be the focal point of Hong Kong's new airport at Chek Lap Kok.

A striking feature of the design is the wing-like modular roof which will have skylights providing natural lighting in the main hall and lounges.

The terminal is designed to be user-friendly.

Movement through the terminal will be simple, with easy connections between passenger processing areas and the concourse, and minimal changes in floor levels.

Notable facilities, for which works are in progress, include: the baggage handling system that will be capable of handling about 19,200 bags an hour; the automated people mover, a driverless train travelling the full length of the concourse and able to carry over 5,200 passengers an hour.

A ground transportation centre, providing transport services, including the Airport Railway, will be built adjacent to the terminal. The above column is produced by the New Airport Projects Co-ordination Office
