LABOUR unionists have called for a change in the law to include overtime pay in the calculation of severance payments.
The demand came as former workers of the Elec & Eltek electronics company protested yesterday against the company's exclusion of overtime pay in compensating 243 staff sacked when its To Kwa Wan factory closed this week.
The workers argued they had worked four hours' overtime each day.
'The company asked us to work during typhoon signal No 8,' said representative Lau Chiu-kam, 43.
'We had to do overtime work because our basic wage was very low,' he said.
Under labour laws, severance payment is based on the basic salary and length of service.
