ANSETT Australia and Taiwan's EVA Airways have agreed to a code-share arrangement for flights between Sydney and Taipei.
Ansett, which begins its twice-weekly service to Taiwan's capital on November 11, hopes to win approval from the Australian International Air Services Commission to begin the code sharing by December 1.
If approved, the agreement would allow each carrier to designate four flights per week as direct Taipei-Sydney services, each using their own flight numbers.
The two airlines will each have two flights a week, and will be able to sell the other carrier's seats as their own.
Ansett, which only began international services in 1993 with flights to Bali, also flies to Hong Kong and will soon begin serving Kuala Lumpur in addition to Taipei. It has also received approval to fly to Seoul, but has not yet announced the launch of services.
EVA, also a new international carrier competing with flag-carrier China Airlines, was formed by the Evergreen Shipping Group and has a worldwide network serving about 20 countries.
