HOUSING Society officials went on a tour of one of the group's hostels yesterday to inspect facilities and meet the tenants. Seventy single lodgers currently rent bed spaces in 16 hostels from the society under a scheme to give needy people affordable and decent accommodation. The Kwun Tong Garden hostel is about 590 square feet and is shared by eight tenants. The monthly rent for a bed space is $270. The scheme, launched decades ago, aims to supplement the Government's rental scheme for single-person units. The society's hostels are spread over five estates. Meanwhile, the Home Affairs Department rents out four units at Kwun Tong Garden to house cagemen as part of its campaign to improve living stan-dards. The department's hostels are managed by the Agency for Volunteer Service and provide 36 bed spaces for lodgers aged up to 60 years. The Government has plans to relocate about 1,000 cagemen to these hostels.
