THAI maids are more likely to be raped or beaten by their bosses than Filipinas with 10 per cent claiming they have been assaulted, it was revealed yesterday.
Complaints of sexual abuse have rocketed since the early 1990s from a dozen a year to about 200, according to Friends of Thais.
The organisation received 700 calls last year about sexual and physical violence, twice as many in 1993.
Chairman Calisterio Amphan said Thais were more likely to be exploited because they spoke little or no English or Cantonese.
The statistics emerged yesterday after a Thai MP claimed maids in Hong Kong were 'working in fear of sexual abuse'.
Tun Chintavej, who visited the territory last week, is preparing a parliamentary report on ways of helping workers abroad.
