DEMOCRATIC Party legislator James To Kun-sun yesterday made a direct appeal to the Conservative Party for full British passports for Hong Kong people.
Addressing a meeting in the wings of the Tory party conference in Blackpool, Mr To said granting the passports would 'give all Hong Kong people the courage to stay and fight for our future'.
He said Portugal, one of the poorest nations in the European Union, had granted citizenship to several hundred thousands in Macau, 'ironically enabling Chinese citizens in Macau to live anywhere in the EU, including Britain'.
Mr To told the Tories few people would want to leave their home. 'What they want is insurance for the future,' he said.
The Democrat is seeking a meeting with Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind and minister for Hong Kong Jeremy Hanley during the Blackpool meeting.
In his address, Mr To also pressured London to stand up for Hong Kong to ensure the new Legislative Council would survive beyond 1997.
