HONG KONG bagged three silver and three bronze medals at the Asian Rowing Championships in Shanghai yesterday, and national coach Chris Perry is hoping for a breakthrough when the competition resumes today.

Defending champion Ho Kim-fai could only take second place in the women's lightweight singles race behind China's Ou Shaoyan as they left their rivals hopelessly behind.

Ou, who had earned China a lightweight doubles berth in the next year's Atlanta Olympic Games, won in 8:06.46 with Ho crossing the line three seconds adrift. South Korea's Park Young-ja was back at 8:45.94.

Hong Kong also won silver medals in the men's heavyweight singles through Michael Tse Ka-tak, and by the men's heavyweight coxless fours crew of Lo Shing-yan, Chiang Wing-hung, Chau Fung-yau and Chan Kwok-leung.

China's Hang Xiaoping beat Tse by about six seconds with a winning time of 7:22.54 and the fours were also beaten by the Chinese sweeps team.

'The standard is very high with the Chinese using some of their best athletes who stayed behind after their national championships here two weeks ago,' Perry said.
