LOCAL women scullers Ho Kim-fai and Fenella Ng Gar-loc gave their Olympic qualifying hopes a shot in the arm by winning the lightweight doubles gold at the Asian Championships in Shanghai yesterday. China's Li Fei and Chen Yuying took the early lead but Ho and Ng finished strongly to win by a two-boat length margin with a national record time of seven minutes 15.19 seconds. Japan took the bronze in 7:29.32. The Chinese secured their Olympic Games berth at the World Championships in Finland two months ago and now Ho and Ng must be the firm favourites to win their places at February's Asian Zone qualifiers in Japan. 'It's an extremely good omen for us to win the gold, and beating the Japanese crew by more than 14 seconds,' said an excited Chris Perry, the Hong Kong national coach. 'And it's most encouraging that Fai and Fenella also won the heavyweight silver, and in a very good time considering that they had a very tough race only an hour earlier.' Hong Kong finished third on the overall medals table with one gold, five silvers and four bronzes. China topped the chart with a tally of 12-2-1.
