GENERAL Electronics has cancelled a loss-making joint venture, Fenghua Jitong Bird Co. The company expects to lose about HK$23 million overall. General Electronics said the joint venture was established in May last year. It was set up to designed, manufacture and distribute Chinese-language pagers. The firm has lost about $9 million since it began operations. General Electronics, which owned 57.5 per cent of the venture, said its share of the losses came to about $5 million for the year to March. Ending the venture would result in about $23 million in losses to General Electronics, according to the company. The company also said that it had applied to the Securities and Futures Commission for a 10-day extension to dispatch documents containing details of a proposal to privatise the company. The extension was necessary so the company could obtain legal opinions to complete valuation of properties in China and Malaysia. Late last month, the company said it planned to cancel all shares owned by its minority shareholders through a cash offer of 47 cents a share.
