I REFER to the letter by Anna Chan of the Immigration Department, headlined, 'Trained to be fair' (Sunday Morning Post, October 1).

I would like to supply another example of the Immigration Department-style fairness.

My wife applied two months before her dependent visa expired (one month is recommended), to get it extended for a year.

Ten weeks later her visa had expired, and she was trapped in Hong Kong. She was told that she could not leave Hong Kong, as she would be stopped at the border for overstaying her visa.

The reason we were given by the Immigration Department is that five years ago Poland, her home country, was 'associated with the Soviet Union', so they needed to run scrupulous checks.

These checks took nine weeks a year ago, when she got her dependent visa (not six, as we were originally told).
