THE Port Authority of Thailand has ordered 30 ContChamp reachstackers, valued at about US$10 million, from Kalmar LMV of Sweden. It is the largest single order received by the world's largest manufacturer of heavy fork lift trucks and reachstackers. The contract comprises 15 empty container reachstackers and 15 laden container reachstackers plus product support. It is believed to be one of the largest single reachstacker orders ever placed. Delivery is to be completed by spring next year. The deal was co-ordinated by Kalmar's wholly owned subsidiary in Singapore, Kalmar LMV East Asia, through a local contact V & Associated Co in Bangkok. Kalmar recently set up a wholly owned sales and product support company in Tokyo. Kalmar Japan will be headed by Hiroshi Watanabe, who has considerable experience in the Japanese heavy fork lift truck market. Kalmar Japan will concentrate in the heavy market sector as the company believes there is considerable market potential not only for high capacity fork lift trucks, but also for reachstackers, which are not made in Japan. It is the first time a major foreign fork lift truck manufacturer has established a big presence in Japan.
