Innocent lives now at risk

THERE has been intermittent correspondence in these columns concerning the dangers that the high level of container lorry usage poses along Tai Po Road between Kowloon and Sha Tin.

I am a resident of Caldecott Road and it has been obvious to all of us living here that the container traffic is reaching intolerable levels.

Traffic jams and accidents are becoming common occurrences.

There is a central reservation at the junction of Tai Po Road and Caldecott Road which has received such a battering from container lorries crashing over it that the Government recently reconstructed it with graduated concrete sides and a bricked up surface replacing the squashed vegetation there previously.

Two days after work had finished on this a container lorry toppled over, because it was going too fast (through a traffic light-controlled junction and a designated black-spot), and demolished part of the new central reservation.

My concern is that next time (and there will be a next time) a container may crush another vehicle as it topples over, killing all inside.
