TRAINER Alex Wong Siu-tan topped the bidding at the opening day of the Horses in Training sales at Newmarket to purchase a highly-rated Irish galloper, writes Robin Parke. Wong paid $925,000 for Classic Fountain who had five starts as a two-year-old this season and finished third in the Group Three Futurity Stakes at the Curragh, when trained by Ger Lyons. Classic Fountain is by Classic Music out of the unraced mare Lucky Fountain, a sister to Shambo whose career record of eight wins included success in Group Two and Group Three races. Classic Fountain is rated 94 by the Irish Turf Club, having won an early maiden at Fairyhouse and then finished third in the Listed Tyros Stakes and in the Futurity. His Irish trainer was against selling the horse for whom he was predicting a bright three-year-old career but the sale went through to dissolve a partnership and Wong may have ended up with a potential topliner.
