GREENPEACE is to protest from Hong Kong against China's 'irresponsible' development of nuclear power stations if it opens an office here next year.

The board of the high-profile anti-nuclear group will meet tomorrow to discuss the proposal to open a full-time East Asia office in the territory, according to regional campaigns and development director Anne Dingwall from the Amsterdam head office.

'We're 99 per cent certain it'll happen,' she said.

'We're attempting to have all this [the office] established by the middle of next year.' The Beijing authorities last Wednesday signed contracts with the same team that built Daya Bay to build a second identical plant next door at Lingao.

Greenpeace is well-known for its high-publicity protests, particularly against nuclear energy and weapons. Four members - including Ms Dingwall - were arrested and held for about 30 hours in August after unveiling banners in Tiananmen Square against nuclear bomb testing.

The group would voice its opposition to China's nuclear power industry once in Hong Kong.

'We would strongly disagree with it. It's such a dangerous route to go down. There are a lot of arguments but there's no certainty on the safety side and nobody has a clue what to do with the waste,' said Ms Dingwall.
