BRILLIANT Australian handler David Hayes can continue his bright start to his Hong Kong training career by taking the fifth event on an exciting nine-race card at Sha Tin this afternoon with Shinnecock Hills. The dirt proved to be Shinnecock Hills' undoing on his debut in the territory a fortnight ago. There is no substitute for racing experience on the all-weather surface and it was pure natural ability and guts which saw Shinnecock Hills fly home to finish a head second to Gints To Win. It was an unbelievable run from the four-year-old given that he was slowly into his stride, hung all the way and was forced to travel wide. He turned for home right at the back of his field and it was only when he hit the home straight that he found his stride and fairly sliced through his opponents. Unfortunately, the line came too soon in that 1,150-metre dirt event, but the reversion to grass should see him take plenty of beating this afternoon. His work had been really good leading into his debut run and providing he does not fall foul of the dreaded second-up syndrome, he should go close. The outside draw would be a disadvantage if there was not going to be any pace on in the race, but there is. A good clip is guaranteed by the presence of Namjong jumping from barrier six and Hussar from barrier nine. This should allow Shinnecock Hills to come with a strong late run and there are few better jockeys around than the triple South African champion Piere Strydom when it comes to riding one from off the pace. The Melbourne Cup-winning rider, Steven King, rode Shinnecock Hills last time out but is now on Bruce Hutchison's Chalky Boat whom he rode in Australia and then for a second and a third on his final two outings of last season. Chalky Boat has been working well, going really nicely in a trial down the straight, and has to be given serious tierce and quinella consideration on both his form and the apparent decision of King to ride him rather than Shinnecock Hills. But bigger dangers could come from the likes of the boom sprinter, Winning Spirit, a much fitter Hussar, and the improving Happy Occasions. Winning Spirit has won four of his five outings and been second on the only other occasion he has faced the starter. There is no telling just how good he is going to be, but there has been just the slightest hint in his most recent work that while he is a potential Class One sprinter in the making, he is not absolutely top grade and the 10 pounds rise in the ratings could just find him out. He is also likely to be at short odds. Hussar is a big, gross horse and he needed his first run of the season. Since then he has improved in his work and is likely to be a big threat to all this afternoon. Happy Occasions thrived when fitted with blinkers last season and has come back into work looking as if he is going to progress again this time round. He has come on for his reappearance effort and should not be dismissed, especially in bets like the Double Trio. Hong Kong Supreme always works well, but even accounting for his own trackwork ability, he appears to be going better than last season. Chiu Chow Warrior has been something of a disappointment, but should be afforded one last chance as he is well handicapped on his best efforts of last season and could well run into the tierce. Patrick Biancone has put the blinkers back on his expensive AJC Derby fourth, Gazebo Star, and they should help him secure victory in the day's closing event. Gazebo Star needed his first run in the territory when a creditable, staying-on fifth to Fortune Ride on a rain-affected track. Since then he has worked smartly in the blinkers which he wore for all his best runs back in Australia. That pipe-opener behind Fortune Ride should also have woken him up and he is going to thrive for the move to 2,000 metres. Super Goal remains in tip-top condition for leading trainer Brian Kan Ping-chee and could well give Gazebo Star most to do. Kan's rising five-year-old is facing a big step up in distance from a mile, but his relaxed style of racing suggests he could even be more effective over this kind of trip.
