WHILE the speediest of the Trailwalker contingent arrived home wearily in the early hours of yesterday, stragglers determined to finish the mighty marathon managed to keep their spirits up. Chanting favourite tunes and chatting about anything and everything, hundreds of hikers of all ages pressed on along the 100-kilometre MacLehose Trail. By late yesterday afternoon, one-third of the 2,400 participants had completed the challenge, many vowing never to do it again. Civilian team Carlingford Comets took race honours in 14 hours 26 minutes after the favourites, the Queen's Gurkha Signals, withdrew due to injury. The last team is expected to arrive at the Perowne Barracks finishing line at 11 am today, 48 hours after the starter's gun fired. Oxfam publicity officer Judy Au Man-yee said the average time taken to complete the mountainous hike through eight country parks was 25 hours. Apart from the Gurkha team member's pulled muscle, she said, no other injuries were reported during the 14th Trailwalker. Ten taipans, who passed eye-catching batons as they walked in relay format, met their target of raising $2 million. The last walker from the Taipans' team, Hongkong Telecom chief executive Linus Cheung Wing-lam, passed the Tuen Mun finishing line at 2 pm. 'They all looked very tired and worn out, but they were still in good spirits and said they would be straight off to the showers,' Miss Au said. Of the 600 registered teams, only 11 were all-women contingents.
