THE New Delhi city government yesterday ordered the closure of a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) outlet, alleging the American restaurant chain was using high doses of carcinogenic agents to garnish its food.

The move stunned KFC, which only last month opened its restaurant after receiving clearance from the city's government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (Indian People's Party), a right-wing Hindu group, company officials said.

Chief minister Madan Lal Khurana told the city municipal authorities to cancel the KFC licence and banned the fast-food firm from opening any other restaurant in the national capital.

He said the closure was ordered after what it described as a random test of KFC food products that showed sodium aluminium phosphate to be in excess of permissible limits.
