WONG MAN-HOI stole the limelight at the Ha Kwai Chung Government Secondary Technical School's swimming gala at Kwai Shing swimming pool. The commerce student snatched the individual championship in Grade B and won gold medals in the 50 m and 100 m freestyle and 50 m breaststroke races. 'The success came as a surprise and I was thrilled to break my old records in the last meet,' said Man-hoi. He said regular training contributed to his success. 'I have been undergoing intensive training as I am one of the reserve members of the Hong Kong swimming team.' The swift swimmer said encouragement from his coach and fellow students had helped him greatly in the gala. The cheers rang through the pool-side as more than 1,000 pupils took part in the event. The Form Four student hopes to take part in the Olympic Games one day. 'I plan to receive further training at the Hong Kong Sports Institute to prepare for the international meetings,' he told Young Post after receiving his prizes from Mrs Wong Mak Kit-ling. Mrs Wong, the guest-of-honour and principal of the Shau Kei Wan Government Secondary School, urged the students to take part in school activities so as to enjoy their school life. 'There is only one champion in a competition, but prizes are not the only thing we should look for. It is sportsmanship that is most precious,' she said.
