ABOUT 150 delegates from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Beijing University and Taiwan University broke down political and geographical barriers when they gathered at the CUHK campus for the first Friendship Games.
The games brought together the universities' soccer, basketball and volleyball teams for three days this week.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Professor Charles Kao, Vice-Chancellor of the CUHK, praised the event, saying it had opened up opportunities for the three universities to interact with each other on issues other than academia.
Andy Yu Pak-kin, the captain of CUHK's basketball team, said it was an excellent opportunity to learn from their rivals, not only on the sports ground, but also socially and culturally.
'We enjoy the chance to be able to interact with students from the other two universities.
'No matter whether we win or lose, it is a good occasion to learn from them.' To the three university contingents the games were seen more as a social and sporting affair than a series of competitive matches.
