A RECORD 1,510 swimmers took part in the annual New Year winter race from Middle Bay to Repulse Bay yesterday in water of about 17 degrees Celsius. Among the swimmers, who were aged from 71/2 to 82, were 10 physically disabled athletes, including 16-year-old Lum Lai-yee, a blind athlete who has represented Hongkong in many international games. Lai-yee found her way along the 600-metre course by following her coach's whistle. She finished in 13 minutes to win the disabled section. Other winners were Alex Wong Chu-hei (men's section), Cheng Hoi-yan (women), Leung Kam-tim (men over 45) and Ng Yung-ho (women over 45).
