THE first of the new temporary housing blocks will be ready in Sha Kok Mei, Sai Kung, by the end of next year.
Ninety-six homes will be offered in four or five-storey prefabricated blocks. Kitchens, toilets, and simple fittings will be mass manufactured in workshops and site workers will only need to put the ready-made items in place. Walls will be made from prefabricated panels. Existing temporary homes are built with timber and often become infested with white ants. Timber is also less resistant to rain. Similar prefabricated blocks are being used by the Provisional Airport Authority as quarters for workers on the Chek Lap Kok site. The contractor, Shun Shing Construction Company, said the blocks could be assembled in as quickly as two months if comprehensive internal designs were provided.
