IN A past lifetime he was known as Kelvin Ng. Local tennis fans with a long memory will recall that in the early 1980s, he was Hong Kong's number one player before giving it all up to pursue his medical studies in England.

Today, Kelvin Ng has changed his name to Kelvin Inge. He has also added the honorific Dr to his name.

However, these changes have not affected his love for tennis and his involvement with the game in Hong Kong is still deep as ever.

Having returned to the territory earlier this year to start practising as a cardiologist, Dr Inge has also resumed his ties with the Hong Kong Tennis Association (HKTA).

Yesterday, Dr Inge was appointed as the territory's new Davis Cup captain, a move which local tennis officials hope will bring about a change in the game's international fortunes.

'We think he is the ideal person to be in charge of the Davis Cup squad at the moment,' said Dr Ed Hardisty, the HKTA's executive director.

Earlier this year, Hong Kong were relegated to Group II of the Asia-Oceania Zone after losing to Taiwan at Victoria Park.
