BY presenting outstanding exhibitions in the visual arts and associated activities, the Urban Council hopes to raise the level of cultural and artistic awareness in the community and thus enrich Hong Kong life. UC chairman Dr Ronald Leung Ding-bong was addressing a gathering of internationally renowned artists, critics, scholars, professors and museum curators at the opening of the 'Xubaizhai International Symposium and Exhibition of 20th-Century Chinese Painting' at the Hong Kong Museum of Art. The exhibition comprises three separate displays featuring over 200 paintings by major Chinese artists of this century. The main display - 'Twentieth Century Painting: Tradition and Innovation' - features 137 paintings by 108 masters selected from collections in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Indonesia and North America. The art works are on display at the museum's Chinese Fine Art Gallery until January 14, 1996. The 'Homage to Tradition: Huang Binhong' display will continue at the Xubaizhai Gallery until March 17, and the 'Vision and Revision: Wu Guanzhong' display will be on at the Special Exhibition Gallery until December 10. The Hong Kong Museum of Art is situated next to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
