THE Kap Shui Mun Bridge and Ma Wan Viaduct are also major parts of the Lantau Fixed Crossing, and are being constructed together under a design and build contract.

The Kap Shui Mun Bridge differs from the Tsing Ma suspension bridge in that it is cable-stayed. However, like the Tsing Ma Bridge, it will carry six lanes of traffic on its upper deck and two railway tracks, and two road lanes for emergency use, on its sheltered lower deck.

Erection of the bridge's main span began in May this year, and is expected to take about 11 months to complete. Construction of the bridge is on schedule for completion in May 1997.

The bridge will have an overall length of 820 metres with its main span of 430 metres being 45 metres above sea level.

It will be Hong Kong's first cable-stayed road bridge as well as the world's longest span cable-stayed bridge, carrying both road and rail traffic.

The Ma Wan Viaduct will cross the island of Ma Wan and link the Tsing Ma Bridge and the Kap Shui Mun Bridge. It will have a total length of 503 metres and have the same traffic configuration as the two bridges.
