POLICE continued to set the pace in the San Miguel First Division rugby union league, defeating Valley Black 33-0 yesterday. With four games remaining before the revamped league's first round ends, Police will probably regret having given the other Valley team, the Red Devils, a point last Saturday when they beat them by less than seven points - 14-12. Police now are on 20 points at the top of the standings. Valley Red, who yesterday defeated Club Green 27-11, are second on 17, but they have a game in hand. Logic says it is only a matter of time - most probably by next Saturday when Police have a bye - before the Red Devils move to the top. But until that happens, Police can rest satisfied that they have beaten both Valley teams, whose avowed aim before the start of the league was to finish one-two. As long as Police keep on playing the way they are currently doing, Valley will not achieve that goal. Yesterday, Police ran in four tries - courtesy of Dave Lewis, Colin Lupton, Jim Walker and Callum Black - as they totally outplayed Valley. It was surprising that Hong Kong internationals Vaughan Going, Jeff Piper and Mark Solomon could not get their names on the scoresheet for Valley. This was mainly due to a blanket defence in midfield laid down by Police centres Jim Walker and Pete Wooley and the superb cover of back rowers Charlie Strickland and Tony Harker. Police had the game wrapped up in the first half. An early pushover try by prop Lewis gave Police the right start. Speedy winger Colin Lupton, who looks as if he can accelerate as fast as a Ferrari, also showed he is no slouch as he hacked a dropped pass for the second try. When Walker completed a dizzy move involving both forwards and backs to score Police's third try, it was all over for Valley. They perked up a bit in the second half but the individual flair which is so much a part of their game was missing. It was left to Police fly-half Black to provide that with a cheeky chip-and-catch try. Early in the match, prop Neil Alton had been sin-binned (following in the footsteps of fellow Hong Kong international Stuart Krohn who was penalised in the game against Club Green).
