THE Macau International Airport Cup was cancelled yesterday because of failing daylight.
Delays in the ill-fated second leg of the accident-packed 42nd Macau Grand Prix forced organisers to call off the later event.
The new race, which was only announced two days ago, was supposed to celebrate the opening of the Macau International Airport but the race delays, caused by a massive pile-up at the start of the second leg of the Formula Three race, put paid to the inaugural race.
'It was decided that the extra race should be cancelled because the programme was running very late and it was impossible to stage it because of impending darkness,' a race official said.
The 30-car race was meant exclusively for Macanese drivers in 1,600 cc cars.
'It was a pity we had to cancel the race but there was nothing we could to do. The sun was setting and we were running out of time,' he said.
Grid positions for the Cup race were based on practice times for the ACP trophy race on Thursday.
