TO encourage local artists, the Urban Council is holding the Second Hong Kong Artists Series Exhibitions, following the great success of the earlier series, which was launched in 1992.
Starting off this year's programme is an exhibition of original works by Chinese calligrapher Chan Man-kit, now on display at the Contemporary Hong Kong Art Gallery of the Hong Kong Museum of Art. The display continues till December 17.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Lam Man-fai, vice-chairman of the Urban Council's Museum Select Committee, said the series will give local artists the opportunity to present their work to the public through solo shows at the Museum of Art and the Urban Council civic centres over the next two years.
'The exhibitions will also give the public a better understanding of the Hong Kong art scene and of the different styles of local artists,' Mr Lam said.
Twenty-six artists were chosen from over 250 applications sent in for the solo exhibition series.
The display by Chan features some 50 samples of Chinese calligraphy.
