IN a show of friendship, students of Pooi Tun Secondary School teamed up with mentally handicapped youngsters to celebrate their annual sports day, held recently at the Hammer Hill Road Sports Ground.
About 100 mentally handicapped students from Ngau Tau Kok Holy Word School took part in the athletics meeting.
'The special school for the mentally handicapped is our sister school,' said Pooi Tun Secondary School principal Sherman K. B. Leung.
'The two schools have enjoyed a close relationship for a long time.
'This is the third year we have invited the handicapped children to our sports day. As organiser of the programme, we want to create a family atmosphere for them.' The annual sports meet has drawn the two schools together, and over the past couple of years the students have made many friends and come to know each other much better.
There were five sports events: shot put, 60 m race for boys, 60 m race for girls, long jump, and a 4 x50 m relay. There were five mixed teams, with two boys and two girls from both schools.
Wong Koon-pun, a Holy Word student, was awarded two gold championship medals by Pooi Tun Secondary School.
