THE women's triples side were the only Hong Kong team to win a game in the opening rounds of the Pacific Bowls Championships in Dunedin, New Zealand. The women's team of Jenny Wallis, Linda Smith and Lena Yeung Ching defeated Western Samoa 21-12 in Section B, which also includes favourites New Zealand, who opened their account with a 22-7 win over Singapore. The women's pair of Angela Chau Sau-ling and Rosemary McMahon crashed to a 21-15 loss to Singapore in their Section A match. The Hong Kong men's teams also failed to win. Noel Kennedy and Willie Lai drew 14-14 with Cook Islands in their first Section B match while the territory's triples team of Danny Ho, Ken Wallis and Mel Stewart were beaten 16-9 by Fiji in Section B. New Zealand and Australia had emphatic wins in both men's competitions. The Kiwi pair beat Canada 27-10 in Section A while their triples team stormed to a 37-11 Section B win over Papua New Guinea. Australia thrashed Fiji 39-13 in a pairs Section B match while their triples side trounced the US 22-12. The first week of competition features the pairs and triples. The singles and fours tournaments start next week. Kennedy will represent the territory in singles while Ho, Wallis, Lai and Stewart team up for the fours. Chau will be Hong Kong singles player in the women's competition leaving Wallis, McMahon, Smith and Yeung to play in the fours.
